  4.     As Lebanon descended into chaos, the Bush Administration
  5. debated whether to shut down its embattled embassy. A pullout
  6. would signal a devastating ineffectiveness, but last week the
  7. White House finally did call it quits, ordering the evacuation
  8. of Ambassador John McCarthy and 29 other officials. The walled
  9. embassy compound had been besieged by 1,500 Christian supporters
  10. of Major General Michel Aoun, who were angered at the U.S.
  11. failure to side with them against Syrian occupiers. The move
  12. left Washington without representation in Beirut for the first
  13. time in Lebanon's 14-year civil war.
